Brazil is advancing in the elimination of HCFC refrigerants, such as R-22, following the Brazilian HCFC Phase-Out Plan (PBH), which foresees gradual cuts until total prohibition in 2040. Additionally, from 2029, HFCs will also begin to be reduced according to the Kigali Amendment due to their high global warming potential (GWP).
Given this scenario, companies and users should plan the transition to more sustainable options, such as Opteon™ refrigerants, which have low GWP and zero ODP. For those still using R-22, there are two alternatives:
Retrofit – Replace only the refrigerant, opting for solutions like Opteon™ XP20 (R-449C) for air conditioning or Opteon™ XP40 (R-449A) for refrigeration.
Equipment replacement – Choose new models with Opteon™ XL fluids, which offer up to 99% lower GWP than R-22.
The ideal time to start this transition is now! Beyond choosing refrigerants, training professionals and performing efficient maintenance are essential to ensure continuous operations with sustainability and energy efficiency.
