Toward a cleaner future: Europe commits to cutting 90% of emissions by 2040

The European Union (EU) approved, last Wednesday (2), the goal of reducing its net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, using 1990 levels as a reference. This decision reaffirms the bloc's commitment to leading the global transition to a low-carbon economy.

The measure sparked mixed reactions. While representatives of European industry expressed concern over the strictness of the targets and potential economic impacts, environmentalists argued that the actions could be even more assertive.

For Brazil, this new EU directive represents a strategic opportunity, as highlighted by Patricia Ellen, CNN's special analyst for COP30. According to her, “it’s a great opportunity for the country,” since few countries in the world are equipped to provide the products, services, and carbon that Europe will need to meet these targets.

Patricia also pointed out that the European decision allows the use of carbon credits from developing countries, which could benefit Brazil. However, she warned that the country will need to adapt to stricter rules that demand greater transparency and governance.

Expectations surrounding COP30, which will be held in Brazil, are quite positive. Patricia Ellen highlighted the “optimism” observed at preparatory events in Europe, especially due to the strong participation of the private sector in London.

Global mobilization is already taking shape in Brazil with the organization of preparatory events. One example is the announcement of the Climate Investment Summit (CIS), confirmed by Prince William, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro on November 4th, 5th, and 6th, ahead of the first week of the conference.
