Latin America made progress in adopting natural refrigerants in 2024, standing out as a promising market. According to the ATMOsphere report, the region has 680 CO₂ transcritical installations—580 in supermarkets and 100 in industries. Brazil leads in regulations for the safe use of these refrigerants, alongside Chile and Argentina, and has 863 supermarkets operating with R134a/CO₂ cascade systems and 81 using propane chillers.

Globally, Latin America still has a modest share in the transition to natural refrigerants compared to Europe, which has 95,600 installations, and Japan, with 12,720. In addition to CO₂, refrigerants like ammonia (R717) and hydrocarbons (R290 and R600a) are gaining ground, with Europe leading in the use of self-contained units with hydrocarbons (17 million installations). In the U.S., the number of hydrocarbon-based units reached 4.6 million in 2024.

Despite the growth, challenges remain, such as the need for more comprehensive regulations and incentives to drive the adoption of efficient technologies in Latin America.
